1 c. sugar 2/3 c. butter, softened 2 eggs, beaten 2 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. almond extract 3 c. all purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. red food coloring
Preheat oven to 350° F.
Beat sugar and butter in a large bowl until creamy. Add eggs, vanilla and almond extracts. Mix flour and baking powder and stir into butter mixture.
Divide dough in half and tint one half with red food coloring. Wrap each half in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 2 hours,.
Divide each half into 32 pieces. Roll each pieces into a 5" rope. Twist 1 red and 1 white rope together and bend 1 end to form a candy cane shape. Place on ungreased baking sheets.
Bake for 8 - 10 minutes or just until set and lightly golden. Remove from baking sheets and cool on wire racks. Makes about 32 cookies.
